There has been a lot of planning for the upcoming year in the past few months. Sean Carter, your incoming president, had his Strategic Planning Meeting in May to plan for the 2017/2018 year. Lots of great ideas were brainstormed and it's going to be an exciting year. Also, the incoming ASID Ohio North Board traveled to San Deigo a few weeks ago for the Leadership Conference. I'm going to send it over to Sean to recap their wonderful experience.

So, have a great day Ohio and see you at an event soon!

Here's Sean...

Tracy Phelps, ASID
President 2016-2017

Hello ASID Ohio North!

For those who don’t know who I am, I’m Sean Carter, current President-Elect, coming into Presidency this October 1, 2017. If you might not already know, we’re currently in the process of finalizing our goals for the next year and we’re gearing up for an exciting 2018 with you all! A portion of preparing for the next year includes the 2018 ASID Ohio North Board attending the ASID National Chapter Leadership Conference, which was held in San Diego this year.

I’m enthusiastic to announce that we’ve all gained so much knowledge during the conference, as well as a ton of great ideas! ASID National has provided us with a great deal of guidance and knowledge to pass down to our members. I won’t bore you with a whole lot of details, but here are a few highlights we gained from the conference that you can expect to see implemented next year.

1. Design Impacts Life: This is a big movement ASID National is truly passionate about. The main purpose focuses on health, wellness and well-being. Design Impacts Life extends beyond the walls of the space you’re designing; it’s a movement to emphasize the obesity epidemic in the United States, higher percentage ratings of endless diseases, the significant amount of the baby boomers approaching retirement, handicap lifestyles, and so much more. The purpose is for designer to bring awareness to impacting lives by promoting healthier lifestyles, continuing to research cures for diseases, educating and preparing for the future of the baby boomers, giving back to those in need, and more!

2. One Voice: This is a great movement ASID National is promoting. It’s all about YOUR voice being heard in the industry and making sure your rights as an Interior Designer are protected. One Voice focuses on you as an individual Interior Designer by protecting, fighting for, and following through with rights you currently have and rights you feel you deserve.

3. Insurance Program: Some of you might be aware about the insurance programs through ASID Membership, but some may not. Did you know being a member of ASID provides you the benefit of insurance? ASID offers both business and personal health insurance plans for members of the organization. Both are specially constructed specifically for an interior designer and their business. We’ll be promoting information on this in the upcoming year!

4. Building up the structure of the chapter: Building the chapter by gaining volunteers / committees, promoting the Fellowship Program, promoting the Ones to Watch Program, and initializing a yearly chapter sponsorship program.
So here are some things to look forward to this next upcoming year. We received a lot of great feedback from our membership survey, and are pairing that with great ideas from the Chapter Leadership Experience. One of the biggest requests was tours, so we’re working on introducing some “ASID Experiences”! We also had a lot of feedback for collaborations with other design organizations, more public exposure, and of course more CEU’s. So look out for quarterly networking with other organizations, the return of the Annual Meeting and Design Awards Gala, a higher focus on students through career day / mentoring day / speed networks / college visits, and even looking into high school visits for schools who offer an interior design program. Lastly we’ll be focusing on “Design Impacts Life” throughout all our events, configuring a community service project, and promoting CEU’s based on health, wellness and wel-being.

We’re looking forward to a great year with you all!

Thank You,
Sean Carter, Allied ASID
